FBA Prep Center UK 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Mastering FNSKU Labelling and Polybagging

If you’ve spent any time in the Amazon ecosystem, you know the "Red Triangle of Doom". That notification in Seller Central telling you your shipment has been flagged, delayed, or outright rejected. It’s a gut punch. Not just because of the "Unplanned Prep" fees, but because your inventory is sitting in a warehouse corner while your "In Stock" date slips further away.

At Easyadd, we’ve been on both sides of the tape. As active D2C and FBA sellers ourselves, we built this 3PL because we were tired of corporate providers who didn’t care about our dispatch metrics.

With Amazon UK announcing they are ending their in-house prep service from 1 July 2026, the pressure is on. You can no longer rely on Amazon to fix your mistakes. You need to get it right before it leaves the warehouse.

Here is your no-nonsense guide to mastering the basics of FBA prep.

The £15,000 Mistake: A Quick Story

A few months ago, a seller came to us in a panic. They had shipped 3,000 units of a high-margin skincare gift set directly from their manufacturer to an Amazon Fulfilment Centre. The manufacturer had promised everything was "FBA ready".

It wasn't.

The barcodes were printed too small and wouldn't scan. Worse, the "Sold as Set" bundles weren't sealed properly, and individual units were sliding out. Amazon rejected the entire shipment. The seller was facing a £15,000 inventory deadlock and mounting storage fees.

We had the stock diverted to our Westland Distribution Park facility, where our team manually relabelled every unit with scannable FNSKUs and heat-shrunk the bundles. We got them back into the FC in under 72 hours.

The lesson? Don’t trust a factory 5,000 miles away with your Amazon reputation.

1. FNSKU Labelling: The Golden Rule

The FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) is how Amazon identifies your specific inventory. If you use the manufacturer's UPC/EAN, you risk "commingled inventory": where your high-quality stock gets mixed with a competitor’s potentially dodgy batch.

Placement is everything: Labels must be on a flat surface. Never wrap a barcode around a corner or over a seal.
Cover the old: If there is a manufacturer barcode on the box, the FNSKU must cover it completely. Amazon’s scanners get "confused" if they see two barcodes.
Print quality: Use a thermal printer. Inkjet prints smudge, and a smudged barcode is a rejected barcode.

2. Polybagging & Suffocation Warnings

Polybags aren't just for clothes. They protect your stock from the dust and grime of a massive FC. But they come with strict safety rules.

  • The 12cm Rule: In the UK, any polybag with an opening of 12cm or more MUST have a suffocation warning. No exceptions.
  • The "Scannable" Test: If your product is inside a bag, the FNSKU must be on the outside of the bag. If the barcode is on the product, the bag must be clear and the barcode must be easily scannable through it.
  • Total Seal: The bag must be completely sealed. If a product can slip out, Amazon will flag it as a "prep error".

3. Carton Standards: Don't Break the Backs (or the Rules)

How you pack your outer boxes is just as important as the units inside. Amazon UK has very specific limits to protect their staff.

  • Weight Limits: No single carton should exceed 23kg.
  • Heavy Marking: Any box over 15kg must be marked as "Heavy Package" on at least two sides. ✅
  • Box ID Labels: Every carton needs its own unique FBA Box ID label. Place these on the side of the box, not on the seam where the tape goes.

If you’re scaling past 500 orders a month, managing these minute details becomes a full-time job. That’s where a specialist Amazon FBA prep service comes in.

The "No-Theatre" Approach to Prep

Most 3PLs are black boxes. You send stock in, pray it’s done right, and talk to a chatbot when things go wrong.

At Easyadd, we don't do "theatre". You get direct communication with the people actually handling your stock. As current Amazon and eBay sellers, we understand your P&L and your margin math because we’ve sat in your chair. We treat your FNSKU labels and polybagging with the same precision we use for our own brands.
